Inverted World (eBook): Priest, Christopher: The city is winched along tracks through a devastated land full of hostile tribes. Rails must be freshly laid ahead of the city and carefully removed in its wake. Rivers and mountains present nearly insurmountable challenges to the ingenuity of the city's engineers. But if the city does not move, it will fall farther and farther behind the optimum.
The first 3 sections of the book were almost exactly what I expected, laying out a society a couple centuries into facing a really intriguing set of circumstances. Priest tends to treat hard SF concepts with a delicate touch I appreciate, and Inverted World was no different. I loved what he did with the science up to this point/5(). The original Omnibus LP of "Oh, Inverted World" is a different mastering to the common Sub Pop LP, but it is in no way superior. The content is identical, but the cutting is very bass-shy and a bit sibilant and distorted. A great collector piece but stick to your standard edition for listening.

What makes Inverted World shine like no other book is that it illustrates so perfectly how human beings create the context for their own suffering, yet this explanation never dulls the agony of Helward’s predicament. And while Helward’s story is tragic, the underlying narrative is hopeful.
Inverted World is the first book by Priest I've read, and I found it to be a revelation. The main business here is the building of an outlandishly original fantasy world, artfully revealed to us in provocative flashes by a young apprentice named Helward. Without giving anything away (the revealing is so much of the fun!), I'd just say that it's.

Inverted World has writing that can charitably be described as poor, and characters that are almost impressively flat and uninteresting, but what partially makes up for these flaws is the world which the novel creates- an entire city has been put on rails and must be made to move continuously toward a mysterious changing location known as the optimum, or else disaster will befall it/5(24).
